There are many myths and legends about Helios, the sun god. Helios is thought to ride a horse drawn chariot through the sky bringing light to the earth. Naturally the idea of the sun rising in the east and setting in the west at the point which Helios has completed his daily ride. According to the legend he crossed back to the east by floating in a golden cup on the stream of the Ocean, the mythical river thought to encircle the flat earth. Many people believed Helios seen and heard everything going on in that domain. Another mythis many believe that the goddess Demeter consulted him after her daughter Persephone disappeared. Helios told Demeter that Hades, ruler of the underworld had abducted Persephone. One of the most famous myths in which Helios takes part in is that of his mortal son, Phaeton. Phaeton demanded that his father Helios allow him to drive his gleaming chariot across the sky for one day. However when Phaeton set off without permission, he was unable to control his fathers horses. The chariot roamed wildly through the heavens until Zeus intervened and struck the young man dead.
Lastly another legend that Helios was involved in was that his chariot was drawn by four, fiery winged steed and crowned with the aureole of the sun. The horse never let Helios down and always helped him continue his journey .Helios was said to be the only person who can handle the strength and power of his chariot. As another myth states his son Phaeton, Helios's son was stuck by Zeus when he tried to drive it across the sky.
